Meals on Wheels seeks Bridgeport budget support as deliveries rise

Stan Schultz, a board member of the Wise County Committee on Aging, asked the Bridgeport City Council to consider budget support for the county Meals on Wheels program, describing rising need and a projected funding shortfall.
“We are delivering about over 3,000 meals a month,” Schultz said, and he told the council the program helped about 164 seniors in Bridgeport in 2024 and currently delivers meals to almost 50 seniors daily. Schultz said the program previously delivered one hot meal plus six frozen meals per week but has cut back to four frozen meals because of funding constraints. He said each meal costs about $8.85 and the program projects roughly a $300,000 deficit for the coming year.
Schultz described the program as countywide and noted Meals on Wheels relies on thousands of volunteer hours in addition to a few paid staff. He asked councilmembers, who are finalizing budgets in June and July, to consider any support they can provide and suggested donations or automatic monthly drafts via the organization’s website.
Council thanked Schultz and noted the program is a valuable community resource. Schultz provided contact and website information for those wishing to volunteer or donate.
