The Historic Review Board on Aug. 12 approved application 2025‑810217 to add and renovate the single‑family residence at 217 West Center. The proposal fills a gap between the original house and an earlier addition, establishes a new entry and scullery on the northeast corner, and adds a symmetrical infill on the front living room to improve street presence. Staff reviewed the proposal under the design guidelines for additions to historic properties (section 3.3) and lot and primary building guidance (section 3.41/3.42) and recommended approval, noting the chosen materials (cedar‑shaped siding, board‑and‑batten accents and a stone veneer base) were compatible with the existing house.
Board members praised the clearer, more cohesive design compared with earlier iterations and found the application contained sufficient detail for approval. The motion to approve passed on a voice vote.
Why it matters
The project represents an example of infill and sympathetic addition that preserves the character of the original house while improving functionality and street presence. Staff will continue to review final materials and details during permitting.
Follow‑up
The owner will work with staff through permit review; board members noted the hyphen (connecting hall) and materials transitions as items to be clarified in final shop drawings.
