Joey Dunn, deputy city manager, presented a concept the city is calling "Game Day on Main" to the Bryan City Council on Aug. 12. "Quick update on this new concept we wanna bring to you today called Game Day on Maine," Dunn said, describing plans to pair the existing downtown-to-stadium shuttle with outdoor viewing, vendors and sponsorships.
Nut graf: The proposal would use the city’s long-running, free game-day shuttle service to encourage fans to arrive early or stay after football games and to activate downtown businesses by installing large-format video screens around Palace Plaza and coordinating other nearby venues such as LaSalle Hotel and the Palace and Queen theaters.
Dunn summarized the shuttle’s history and ridership growth: the downtown shuttle has operated for 11 seasons and now averages about 1,000 riders per game, a 187% increase since the program began. The proposal includes installing a roughly 22-by-13-foot video wall at the Palace stage and perimeter TV screens under the shade structure, free general admission viewing, and food-and-beverage operations; Dunn said the city is assessing legal restrictions tied to televised game broadcasts and noted VIP or paid seating inside a venue may be possible while public viewing remains free.
Council members asked about weather contingencies and routing. Dunn and other staff said the Palace shade structure might be upgraded over time but that downtown options include the Queen Theatre, Third Floor Cantina and other indoor venues if rain requires moving patrons indoors. Council members also requested continued coordination with Texas A&M and a push to use audio messaging on shuttles to promote downtown offerings.
Ending: Staff said they will return with finer design and timing details and potential sponsorship plans; there was no request for immediate budget authorization at this meeting.
