Board approves $20,000 Project Lead The Way grant for Mountain View Middle School

The Rio Rancho Board approved acceptance of a $20,000 Project Lead The Way (PLTW) grant Monday to establish PLTW Gateway coursework at Mountain View Middle School.
Larry Davis, director of career and technical education, told trustees that district PLTW offerings now exist at both comprehensive high schools and will expand to all four middle schools next year. Davis said national and district data show students who complete two or more courses in a pathway are very likely to graduate; the grant will pay for equipment and training to launch middle-school PLTW courses at Mountain View.
Shelley Kinninen, the district CTE pathway coordinator, wrote and submitted the award proposal on behalf of the district; Davis said teacher training often requires evening or summer hours for certification. Mountain View principal Mrs. Arnold said the school will offer a multi-course pathway built on hands-on, applied learning that staff expect to improve math and science engagement.
Board member Jeff Morgan moved to approve acceptance of the grant; the motion was seconded by Beth Miller and approved by voice vote.
