Moore said the district hosted more than 230 district projects this year; about 65 advanced to regionals and roughly 20 to state. Winners from Rio Rancho High School included first-place and honorable-mention finishes in categories including engineering, plant sciences, biochemistry, microbiology, physics and mathematics. Examples cited by presenters:
• Haider Mondalawi and Sean Ray Vaughan — first place at the state fair (plant sciences) and second at regionals. • Christina Abruzzo and Marissa Montano — first place at state in engineering technology and winners of the New Mexico Network of Women in Science Award. • Jacob Cummings — second place at state in physics/astronomy and a U.S. Air Force special award.
Presenters and board members praised student dedication and the teachers who sponsored projects. The board applauded students and took a group photograph with members. No formal action was required for the commendation.
