Parent tells board a 6‑year‑old was struck by another student; calls for more support for teachers

A Rio Rancho parent told the school board during public comment on May 12 that her 6‑year‑old student was struck in the head by another child who threw a doorstop in a hallway, and she asked the district for better behavioral support for teachers and students.
The parent, Maureen Kamara, said the same child had earlier caused a disruption on a field trip that led several classmates to miss part of the event because staff could not manage the child’s meltdown on the bus. Kamara described the head wound and the emotional effect on her child and said the classroom teacher has “been here to beg for help.” She asked the board how more help for teachers and additional support for students with behavioral needs can be provided.
Board members acknowledged the comment but said they could not respond substantively during the meeting because the item was not on the agenda. Superintendent B.C. Cleveland and board staff said they would follow up and asked the parent to leave contact information so district staff could respond and, if appropriate, place the issue on a future agenda.
The parent urged the board that teachers can’t be expected to act as one‑person behavior managers while instructing an entire class. Board members said the topic — behavioral supports, staffing and supervision — is complex and will receive further attention by the district.
No formal action or vote was taken on the matter during the meeting; board members directed staff to follow up with the parent and to consider whether the issue warrants future agenda time.
