District applies for bilingual-multicultural and adds Pueblo of Santa Ana language program

The Rio Rancho Public Schools Board of Education on April 28 approved two federal and state applications supporting bilingual and English-learner programs, including a New Mexico Public Education Department (NMPED) bilingual-multicultural education funding application for 2025–26.
Suzanne Winn, executive director of federal bilingual and Native American programs, told the board the district projects about 2,800 students in next year’s bilingual-multicultural program — a near tripling of participation compared with two years ago. The application covers language offerings at several schools (Cuesta del Sol, Maggie Cordova Elementary, Eagle Ridge Middle, Lincoln Middle, Cleveland High and Rio Rancho High) and lists Spanish, American Sign Language, Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese and Latin; the district said it will add the Keres language from the Pueblo of Santa Ana to Mountain View Middle School next year.
Winn also highlighted student achievement tied to bilingual programs: since 2017 the district has awarded 178 New Mexico State Seals of Bilingualism and Biliteracy in languages including Chinese, French, Latin, Spanish and German. She told the board that, pending AP exam results, additional seals in American Sign Language and Keres language will be awarded for the 2025 graduating class.
Board member Jessica Tyler moved to approve the NMPED bilingual-multicultural application; Jeff Morgan seconded. The board approved the application by roll call, 5–0.
