Superintendent Dr. Cleveland told the Rio Rancho Public Schools board on July 14 that the district is monitoring federal funding developments that could affect next year's budget, including a currently flagged $780,000 in Title funds and potential impacts to Medicaid reimbursements that support health services.

"At the present time it looks like there's about $780,000 in title funding that is, been pulled back and under review," Cleveland said, adding the district does not yet know whether those funds will ultimately be withheld. She said Rio Rancho receives less federal funding than many other districts in the state, but any reduction is significant.

Why it matters: Cleveland said Medicaid funds pay for "almost all of our health care services in this district," including school nurses, health assistants and other supports. She estimated Medicaid reimbursements amount to about $6,000,000 for the next fiscal year and said losing that funding would have substantial budgetary consequences.

Other program areas under review: Cleveland identified special education and school food services as two other areas the district is watching closely. She said recent changes in school food service that allowed all children to be fed have provided steady revenue that helps sustain quality programs, and uncertainty in that stream would be challenging.

Caution and communication: Cleveland stressed the district has no confirmation that Medicaid or the other programs will be cut and that officials are trying to be careful in public messaging. "We are watching this, but federal funds are an important issue in our state," she said, and pledged to keep the community informed as information becomes available.
