Rio Rancho approves $20,000 in Sandoval County DWI prevention grants for Independence High students

The Rio Rancho Public School Board on Aug. 25 approved two Sandoval County–funded prevention initiatives at Independence High School totaling $20,000. Jessica Sanchez, principal of Independence High School, told the board the grants support student-led media messages and a targeted evidence‑based curriculum.

Sanchez said, “Together, these 2 programs reflect a total grant investment of $20,000 from Sandoval County to support evidence based, culturally responsive, and age appropriate prevention education for our students.” One initiative will run two cohorts in a film and media‑literacy class that will produce four public service announcements and four billboards addressing underage drinking, adult provision of alcohol to minors, and drinking and driving. The second initiative will fund Health Rocks for approximately 45 students, delivering a minimum of 16 sessions focused on decision‑making, refusal skills and risk analysis; students will complete pre‑ and post‑assessments and community prevention activities.

Board member Gary Tripp moved to approve the first program; board member Miller seconded. After roll call the board approved the first grant unanimously, 4–0. Tripp then moved to approve the second $10,000 initiative and Miller seconded; the board approved that grant by the same 4–0 tally. Sanchez said both programs require regular data reporting, evaluation and continued collaboration with the Sandoval County DWI prevention team.
