District 211 honors state champions, Special Olympics medalists and new national board‑certified teacher

Township High School District 211 on Monday recognized dozens of students, coaches and staff for state-level championships, state finalists and other awards across Business Professionals of America (BPA), debate, gymnastics, Special Olympics and girls basketball, and honored Schaumburg teacher Rachel Lakin for earning national board certification.
The recognitions, presented during the board's regular meeting, highlighted individual winners and teams from Palatine, Fremd, Conant, Schaumburg and Hoffman Estates high schools as well as students from Higgins Education Center. District staff identified state champions in BPA events, debate (including Palatine's Lincoln-Douglas and public forum champions and Fremd's state finalists), an IHSA regional gymnastics champion and Special Olympics medalists.
Board members and administrators said the recognitions reflect the district's emphasis on activities that develop academic and leadership skills. Director of athletics and activities Eric Wankowski (introduced at the meeting) and school principals came forward to introduce students and coaches, and families were invited to join students at the podium for photos.
Among the highlights noted by presenters: - Palatine students earned top places in Business Professionals of America and debate competitions; junior Dave Duper won first place in personal financial management at the state BPA competition and was recognized for debate accomplishments as well. - Fremd, Palatine and Hoffman Estates debate and student congress teams produced multiple state semifinalists, finalists and All-State speakers; Palatine reported a state champion in Lincoln-Douglas debate (Ishan Mishra). - Conant and Schaumburg BPA programs reported multiple first-place finishes in state BPA events (Conant: advanced spreadsheet winner Austin Wu; Schaumburg: web design winner Peritosh Vakassia). - Palatine's girls gymnastics team was 8-0, won the MSL division and qualified an athlete, Jolie Waddington, to state finals; Waddington placed in multiple event finals and was named team MVP. - Special Olympics athletes from across the district earned podium finishes in snowshoeing and sprint events; presenters thanked families, coaches and staff for support through difficult winter conditions. - Fremd High School girls basketball earned a 30-6 season record, reached the state semifinals and was recognized for resiliency following the passing of their previous head coach.
The board also presented an extended recognition for Rachel Lakin of Schaumburg High School after she achieved national board certification; presenters described Lakin's work in the English Learner department, coaching and staff development.
No formal actions or policy changes were taken as part of the recognitions; the meeting moved on afterward to the consent agenda and organizational items.
