Township High School District 211 honors state champions, state finalists and program milestones

Township High School District 211’s Board of Education recognized student athletes, performers and coaches from across the district for state-level finishes, program milestones and individual awards during its meeting.
The recognitions included Conant, Hoffman Estates, Schaumburg, Palatine and Fremd students who placed at state, sectional or conference competitions in speech, chess, swimming, wrestling, cheer and other activities. The board highlighted several firsts and record performances: Hoffman Estates celebrated its first female state wrestling champion, Sophia Ball; Conant and Hoffman Estates swimmers were noted for multiple state qualifications and relays; Palatine’s chess coach Adam Levy was named 2025 Illinois Chess Coaches Association Coach of the Year; and several teams — including Schaumburg cheer and chess programs — reached historic placements for their schools.
Why it matters: The board said the recognitions underscore the district’s extracurricular programs as an extension of classroom learning and as a way to develop leadership, discipline and college- and career-ready skills.
The board singled out Sophia Ball of Hoffman Estates as a trailblazer for the district: "Congratulations, Sophia Ball. You have made history, and we are all so proud of you," said Leo Clark Johnson, head wrestling coach, as he introduced Ball and described her record-setting wins and leadership as a team captain.
Presenters and coaches who introduced students emphasized team depth and multi-year success. Hoffman Estates speech coach Naz Ahmed and assistant Jason Gessert (for swimming) introduced state finalists and medalists in public remarks. Conant’s Brian Drenth and his coaching staff described multiple state-qualifying relays and individual school records. Grant Dawson and head coach Matt Zimelzak (represented by Dawson) briefed the board on the Fremd High School freshman chess team’s top-three finish at state — the team’s best finish in program history.
Board President Anna Klimkiewicz and Superintendent Dr. Small thanked families and coaches for the time commitments behind the achievements, calling out early-morning practices, travel and volunteer support as key to sustaining competitive programs.
The recognitions occupied an extended portion of the meeting; multiple principals and athletic directors were on stage to present awards, and the board invited families to stand when their students were named.
Looking ahead, staff and coaches said they anticipate returning to the board next year with additional state qualifiers and renewed goals for program development.
