Two public speakers used the committee meeting’s public comment period to press the board on leadership accountability, classroom resources and teacher workload.
Luke Snyder, a senior at Auburn High School, criticized district priorities and said resources would be better spent on existing schools and teachers than on new capital or security initiatives. “Many of these teachers at previous meetings have pointed out significant problems in our school systems. And what was the board's response? To restrict free speech by limiting public comment,” Snyder said. He urged board members to spend time in classrooms and to listen to teachers’ concerns.
A second speaker, who said they had consulted with Rockford Education Association members, urged the board to focus on immediate, actionable steps for school year 2025–26, particularly time for teachers to collaborate and plan. “Educational professionals simply do not have the time to effectively do all the things you are asking them to do,” the speaker said, calling for a reassessment of the school day and week to give educators adequate planning and implementation time.
The board did not respond to public comment at the meeting; staff said speakers would be contacted if appropriate.
