Rockford Public Schools (RPS 205) highlighted student and staff achievements and described arts and athletics programs and partnerships during the board meeting on Feb. 18, 2025.
The board and district staff recognized students who earned College Board National Recognition awards, including first‑generation and underrepresented‑student recognitions. Superintendent's designee Miss Haley announced honorees from Auburn, East, Guilford and Jefferson high schools and invited students to come forward for recognition.
Miss Haley and Fine Arts Director Melissa Wolf outlined recent successes across music, visual arts and theater. The district named several All‑State musicians from Auburn, Guilford and Jefferson high schools. Theater students auditioned at the Illinois High School Theater Festival and received multiple collegiate offers; the presentation named students and counts of offers (for example, one student received 19 offers, another 26 offers). Wolf described partnerships that support student opportunities: a collaboration with Millikin University for choral workshops, a partnership with the Rockford Symphony Orchestra that provides faculty professional development, and ongoing support from the Phantom Regiment that provides instruments and sponsors student attendance at music camps. Wolf also noted a mural project at Hillman Elementary School with Rockford muralist Dustin Eckhart and cited regional competitions where students and faculty earned awards.
The board recognized teachers and staff achievements: Auburn biology teacher Jessica Palos was named IHSA Sectional Softball Coach of the Year, and Auburn High School physics teacher Mariana Ruggerio was recognized as a recipient of an Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching award, a national honor that includes a certificate and a $10,000 award from the National Science Foundation and an invitation to a Washington, D.C. award ceremony.
In athletics, Director Dawn Williamson described the department's work hosting events (elementary sports, summer sports camps, Hall of Fame and golf outings), coach training (a talent development module for more than 800 coaches districtwide) and building support. Jefferson High School athletic director Zach Larson and student leaders described Jefferson's sports media team and media outputs: student photographers checking out professional gear and publishing photos (one was published by the Rockford Register Star), student‑run broadcasts on Jefferson Athletics TV on YouTube, and bilingual content serving the district's Spanish‑speaking students. Students described free photo downloads for families, media days, and production experience used to generate social media highlights and other school content.
Ending: District leaders said slide materials and the full presentation are available on the board agenda and RPS web pages for those seeking additional details.
