District 200 approves facilities consent items; committees outline HVAC, roofing and turf planning

The Board of Education approved the facilities consent agenda on Aug. 13 and heard a facilities committee update outlining major capital and maintenance work planned for 2026. "For Lowell, there's roof. Half of that is this year. The second half is going to be next year," said Mr. Long, the facilities committee chair, explaining that large projects are being phased across summers. Long said two significant HVAC projects — at Whittier and at the School Service Center — will span two years because of equipment age and failure risk. "There's kind of a risk of catastrophic failure here because of old equipment. So the decision was made, let's get that taken care of," he said. The facilities discussion also listed high‑school auditorium work (lighting, drapery), and routine capital maintenance. Committee materials cited a Sherman Durgis allocation of $7,200,000 for capital work, with playground projects on top, bringing the near‑term total to about $7.9 million. The board emphasized that middle‑school referendum projects are separate from this list. Facilities Committee chair Long and construction staff also previewed timelines for the last two summers of middle‑school work: bid packages for the 2026–27 phase will be released to the public in late October, bids due in November, and recommendations to the board expected in December. The committee noted athletic‑field maintenance needs: both district football fields will require recarpeting, and the committee will explore adding turf in other field areas to evaluate costs and benefits. The facilities consent agenda included statements of completion for summer projects at several schools, a first amendment to a commercial lease for a transition program location, and approval of 2026 capital projects. Board members asked clarifying questions during the committee update and then voted to approve the facilities consent agenda.
