Commissioners press county code officer for clearer records of violations and resolutions

Jefferson County commissioners directed the county code enforcement officer to deliver a revised, consolidated report that documents complaint intake, actions taken, response dates and how each case was resolved.

During the meeting the code officer, identified in the transcript as Kevin, reported totals of outstanding complaints (19 from 2023, 17 from last year and 11–12 from the current year) but the board said the current report lacks sufficient details about date-stamped actions and final resolutions. Commissioners and planning staff described cases where the same contact appeared separately in the report and where follow-up phone calls had not been followed by written letters, leaving county offices and members of the public without a record of the enforcement action.

Planning staff said the board needed visibility into who had been notified and when; prosecuting-office representatives agreed the timeline and disposition should be tracked so staff can determine whether an infraction was corrected or closed for other reasons. The board asked Kevin to adopt a new reporting form that would include date received, case number, complainant name and address, violation description, actions taken, dates of review and date resolved with a clear explanation of how it was resolved.

Kevin said some matters were resolved by coordination with Road and Bridge or through permitting (access or building permits) rather than enforcement action; he also said physical limitations (medical boot) had limited his field inspections recently but that he expected to resume inspections soon.

The commissioners requested the new report be made available to planning and zoning, prosecuting attorney’s office and the board so cases can be tracked from intake to closure.
