The Dalles City Council unanimously approved Mayor Mace’s appointment of Steve Light to the Planning Commission on May 12 by adopting resolution 25‑019. Councilor McLaughlin moved the nomination and Councilor Richardson seconded; the motion carried without opposition.
The nomination drew brief discussion about potential conflicts of interest and the appropriate remedy if a commissioner has a real or perceived conflict. Councilors agreed that standard recusal procedures and the commission’s disclosure rules are the proper safeguards; no member asked to delay or reject the appointment for ethics review.
Councilor Richardson noted his prior work with Light on the Federal Street Plaza committee and described Light as experienced in local projects. Councilors also noted that public transparency and recusal tools are available should a planning commission matter present a conflict involving Light or any other commissioner. With no objection, the council voted to confirm the appointment.
Resolution 25‑019 was adopted; Light will serve on the Planning Commission under whatever term length and vacancy rules the commission follows. The appointment is effective immediately and the Planning Commission will follow its normal procedures for disclosures and recusals if future agenda items create a conflict for any member.
