The Elkhorn Area School District Board of Education approved overnight travel requests for the Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) chapter to attend the National Leadership Conference in Orlando in July and the Fall Leadership Institute in Anaheim in October.
Jenny Wehmeyer, FCCLA advisor, told the board four students would attend nationals in Orlando; she said registration and the star competitor fee "will both be paid for by Perkins funds through career and technical education." She said students were responsible for airfare and a portion of meals, FCCLA fundraising would defray ground transportation, and Perkins funds would pay for the hotel. Wehmeyer estimated students would pay about "$700-ish" for their individual participation.
Students described their competitive events and leadership scholarships: Greenlee spoke about receiving a national scholarship and being elected FCCLA president; Aiden (identified as Aiden/Aiden for culinary events) described baking-and-pastry competition tasks; another student described a culinary math challenge and returning to nationals.
Board members asked about emergency coverage and piggybacking with nearby chapters for chaperone depth; Wehmeyer said she expected no more than six participants at the Anaheim event and that she would have an additional adult chaperone in place. The board approved the overnight travel motion by voice vote.
The approval authorizes staff to finalize travel arrangements consistent with district travel procedures and stated funding sources.
