The Santa Fe County Board of County Commissioners on Aug. 25 approved a resolution to establish a planning committee and start a community planning process for La Cañada de Los Alamos.
Nate Kreyal, county planning staff, presented the resolution, saying the proposal would initiate a public participation plan and outreach over roughly the next year and a half using the boundary the board approved when the community organization was recognized in April. Commissioners and community members in attendance supported the process, noting the area’s historic roots and local concerns about access and water.
Commissioner Adam Johnson said the planning process will allow the community to “advocate for themselves” on issues including access and water availability; Commissioner Lisa Kokari Stone and Chair Camilla Bustamante praised Kreyal’s community engagement work. The motion to adopt the resolution was made by Commissioner Johnson, seconded by Commissioner Hughes, and carried by voice vote.
Why it matters: The resolution initiates a formal community-led planning process with a public participation plan and a planning committee to advise county staff; the committee will advise on strategies and develop a five-year arts-and-culture plan as the county works with the community association.
