Summit Oaks residents praise police response, urge continued patrols

Hermiston — During the citizen-input portion of the July 28 Hermiston City Council meeting, two Summit Oaks residents publicly thanked the Hermiston Police Department for increased directed patrols and said the additional presence has improved neighborhood safety. Wayne Welly, who identified his address as 745 East Quince Avenue, said he returned to the council two weeks after raising safety concerns to report “noticeable difference” from increased patrols and the department’s professionalism. He asked the council to pass along his thanks to Chief Edmondson and officers. Manuel Gutierrez, who said he lives at 750 East Quince, also thanked the police, saying he has seen officers in the neighborhood and appreciates their service to keep the area safe for new generations. Mayor and councilors acknowledged the thanks and asked City Manager Smith to pass the council’s appreciation to the police department. No formal action was taken; the remarks were received as public comment.
