Friends of Hermiston Public Library seek $50,000 for remodel art pieces and readers for March 1 readathon

Representatives of the Friends of the Hermiston Public Library asked the City Council Monday for help recruiting readers and raising funds for a readathon and library-art installations tied to the library remodel.Michelle Monroe, speaking for the Friends, said the readathon will run March 1 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Next Chapter Bookstore while the library is being remodeled and that volunteers read in 20-minute segments. Monroe said the Friends are seeking donations and readers and that the group hopes to raise $50,000 for a 5-by-4 interactive “Lightzilla” wall piece and a roughly 5-foot-tall statue of a child on books to replace an existing fixture at the library entrance.
Monroe provided the council a postcard and a flyer and said the Friends will post donation information on their website, hermistonlibraryfriends.org. She invited members of the council and the public to sign up to read or to make donations through the Friends’ donation site.
The council received the request as an informational item; no formal council action was taken.
