Umatilla fire chief announces resignation, accepts post nearer family

The Umatilla Fire Department’s chief, identified in the meeting as Chief Grant, told the City Council on Jan. 7 that he will resign at the end of this month to accept a division chief position closer to his family.
Chief Grant said the move is prompted by health difficulties and family needs and expressed appreciation for relationships he fostered with the council, city staff and community organizations during his tenure. He cited cooperative work with parks and recreation, the police department and school programs, including bilingual outreach and fire-prevention events.
Council members thanked Chief Grant for his service and wished him well. The council did not take formal action on department succession during the Jan. 7 open session; any appointment or interim staffing plan would be handled by the city manager and department leadership following standard personnel procedures.
