Marathon County Infrastructure Committee members on Sept. 4 voted unanimously to recommend that the County Board sign a letter opposing federal proposals to increase truck size and weight in the upcoming transportation reauthorization.
Chair Gibbs had forwarded the item to the committee; staff said county and town associations periodically consider joining coalition letters when Congress debates truck size and weight changes. Staff and board members discussed the likely local impacts, noting heavier and larger trucks accelerate damage to county roadways and strain already limited infrastructure funds.
Supervisor Dickinson asked whether previous letters reflected full board positions or individual members’ signatures; staff recommended forwarding a unified position through the full County Board rather than individual supervisors signing independently. The committee ultimately moved and seconded the recommendation and voted unanimously to send the letter to the County Board for consideration.
The committee did not adopt binding county regulatory action; the vote was to recommend that the full County Board consider the county joining other local governments in opposing changes to federal truck size and weight allowances.
