The Marathon County Infrastructure Committee unanimously recommended that the full County Board approve a quitclaim deed transferring a small, county‑owned rectangle of right‑of‑way along Highway P to the adjacent church in the Town of O'Plain.
Highway staff told the committee the parcel description created in 1987 left a roughly 33‑foot gap between the church’s property and the highway right‑of‑way because of how the earlier legal description was written. Staff reviewed options — retain the parcel, sell it at fair market value, or quitclaim it and have the church complete title work at its expense — and recommended the quitclaim to correct what staff said appeared to be an unintended remainder from the 1987 transaction.
Staff said the county believed the original intent in 1987 had been to transfer the full area to the church, and that a clerical error led to the current strip remaining in county ownership. The committee voted to forward the staff recommendation to the County Board.
A motion to recommend approval was made by Supervisor Jensen and seconded by Supervisor Dickinson. Committee members asked no substantive follow‑up questions during the discussion, and the vote was unanimous.
If the County Board approves, staff said the church would be responsible for title work and associated expenses under the quitclaim approach.
