Interim Library Director Laurie Burgess on Aug. 20 presented the public library’s priorities and programs as the city and library board prepare for the 2026 budget. Burgess highlighted community partnerships, expanded access to electronic and experiential resources, accessibility changes and a national grant program the library hosts.
Burgess said the library is working with partners such as Fond du Lac Literacy Services and the Wisconsin Job Center, and participates in community events to extend services. She described investments in furniture, adjusted computer layouts, sensory‑friendly programming and an expanded equipment and wellness collection so residents can “try before you buy.” Burgess said a recent addition of experience passes to regional attractions — including two Milwaukee County Zoo passes — has been heavily used.
Burgess described the DesignLab program, a federally funded initiative for 3rd–5th graders, and said the library was 1 of 3 recipients nationally; she said federal funding for year five remained uncertain. She also explained that the library board controls library funds under state statute and that the city council has representation on the board. Council members thanked Burgess, asked about classic print holdings and the Idea Studio maker space, and praised the DesignLab program.
