Manhasset finalizes elementary section sizes after close-to-projection enrollment

The Manhasset Board of Education reviewed final elementary section sizes after administrators said enrollment projections closely matched what the district had budgeted.
Interim Superintendent Dr. Christopher J. Pelletieri told the board that Shelter Rock and Muncie Park enrollment numbers aligned with projected sections. "We were looking at 30 sections in Shelter Rock, and that's what we have," he said. He highlighted kindergarten numbers at Shelter Rock: "Look at kindergarten. We have 12 students across those 4 sections. We have thought honestly about potentially having 3 sections, but I will tell you that there are 5 pending students that we know of, that now you're gonna have 13, 13, 13, and then a 14."
Why this matters: Section counts determine staffing, classroom allocations and budgeting. Board members praised staff for close forecasting and noted the need for long-term planning as some cohorts matriculate to higher grades.
Muncie Park and budget alignment: Pelletieri said Muncie Park came in where it was budgeted: "Muncie Park, budgeted for 38 sections. Again, came right in on that number and really impressive numbers in terms of class sizes throughout." Administrators said they would continue outreach to families with incomplete registration packets to ensure children can start on the first day.
Manhasset Crest development: Board members asked about the nearby Manhasset Crest housing development and whether new homes would affect future enrollment. Pelletieri said district contacts at the development reported two additional five-bedroom homes would come to market soon and that about 10 families from the development had already enrolled in the district. He cautioned that sales depend on market conditions and that only a handful of units were expected to affect near-term enrollment.
Next steps: The board asked staff to continue monitoring registrations and housing developments, and to use liaison and committee assignments to plan for longer-term shifts in cohort sizes. No board vote was required for the enrollment projections themselves; slides and staff remarks were accepted as presented.
