Superintendent Dr. Motley told the Sylvania City School District Board of Education the new 2526 school year "began quite smoothly this year" with orderly building openings, positive teacher feedback on a staggered start and strong student engagement across the district. "Like, we didn't miss a beat," she said.
Dr. Motley described visits to multiple schools, noted safety drills, recounted a minor medical incident at McCord where staff continued instruction, and praised community events including a well‑attended Taste of Sylvania and the district’s athletic hall of fame event, which included awarding a $2,000 scholarship to an Owens student who participated in the district’s career education program.
She also announced she will lead a district review of the use of physical‑education (PE) waivers for the 2627 school year. The superintendent said the waivers have offered flexibility and opportunities but that the district must examine their long‑term fiscal impact and cost avoidance. "I will be revisiting the use of PE waivers here in our district," she told the board, adding that any change would require board support and further discussion.
The superintendent ended her report by thanking staff and noting plans to bring the PE‑waiver review back for board consideration and community conversation ahead of the 2627 budget cycle.
