The St. John Town Council adopted a proclamation at its Aug. 27 meeting recognizing September 2025 as National Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month.
Theresa Stumpf, who identified herself as a St. John resident and a volunteer with the National Ovarian Cancer Coalition, asked the council to again issue the proclamation and provided small awareness items to council members. "Thank you again to Beth and the rest of the council for getting this together for me again, allowing me to build awareness," Stumpf said.
The proclamation text read in the meeting noted that ovarian cancer ranks fifth in cancer deaths among women and cited estimated 2025 figures included in the proclamation: an estimated 20,890 women will be diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 2025 and an estimated 12,730 will die from the disease. The proclamation urged residents to join the observation and support researchers, advocates and health-care professionals working on prevention, detection and treatment.
Council members read and entered the proclamation into the public record; the meeting transcript shows no related motions that would change funding or create new town services.
The proclamation is largely ceremonial and aims to raise awareness; residents and advocacy groups often use the municipal proclamation to publicize awareness events and local observances.
