Court approves use of courthouse lawn for Constitution Day events on Sept. 17

Van Zandt County commissioners approved requests to use the county courthouse grounds on Sept. 17 for Constitution Day events.

The Republican Party of Texas requested use of the north side of the courthouse for a Constitution Day celebration, and the local chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, represented on the record by Terry Woolverton, requested use of the west side for a Bells Across America event. The DAR event is scheduled for 2 to 4 p.m. with the nationwide bell ringing at 3 p.m.

The judge explained the state encourages education about the Constitution and that Sept. 17 is nationally recognized as Constitution Day. Commissioners voted to approve both reservations of courthouse property for the stated times and locations.

The court did not attach special conditions beyond standard permitting for use of county property; organizers are responsible for coordinating logistics and ensuring the events conform with county property-use policies.
