Mayor Jim Barrell spoke at a community event in Town Square Park celebrating the third annual free back-to-school haircut program, where volunteer stylists planned to provide free haircuts to as many as 500 children over a seven-hour period. "They're gonna be here for seven hours today. Their goal is free, free haircuts for 500 kids," Mayor Jim Barrell said, thanking organizers and city staff.

The event, organized by local salon owners and volunteers, brought together stylists from multiple salons and barber schools to offer haircuts, music and lunches for volunteers. "This is our third annual back to school haircutting event for the kids of Federal Way," said Kristen Speakman, owner of Bellerad Salons. She introduced other local participants, including Susan Greenside, owner of Castaway Salon, and Lamont Styles of Lifestyle Barber Academy.

Organizers and volunteers described the event as a community effort intended to support children returning to school. "I feel like this event is really important. It gives back to the community. It brings people together," Greenside said. Lamont Styles said the work is about confidence: "If you look good, you feel good."

City staff provided logistical support, and volunteers supplied services and refreshments for working stylists. A DJ provided music for attendees. Organizers said the event is a way to help children start the school year feeling better about themselves and to bring local businesses and residents together.

Kristen Speakman thanked the volunteers and the city and said the organizers plan to return next year. "We look forward to coming back to year 4," she said.
