Sound Transit testing continues; Federal Way Link opening set for Dec. 6, staff report

Public Works liaison reported Sound Transit’s continuing systems and operations testing, pre-revenue train testing, final paving and restoration work with much flat work expected by mid-September, and the scheduled opening date of Dec. 6 for the Federal Way Link extension; design work continues on Tacoma Dome Link extension.
Ken Smith, the city’s Sound Transit liaison in Public Works, updated the committee on Sound Transit activities affecting Federal Way.
Testing and pre-revenue operations: Smith said systems testing — communications, electrical and live-wire testing — is ongoing. Sound Transit has set an official opening date of Dec. 6 for the Federal Way Link extension; pre-revenue operations and train testing across the corridor are underway.
Construction and restoration: Smith reported final restoration of some parking-lot areas is complete, and final paving, sidewalks, landscaping and roadway work for 20 S. 2nd Ave, S. 318th and S. 317th are ongoing with most flat work expected to be finished by mid-September. Station and garage work is focused on facility testing including fire-protection systems and garage systems.
Other corridors: For the Tacoma Dome Link Extension, Smith said design is advancing for the preferred alternative and preliminary geotechnical and site investigations are ongoing; no major new updates were reported for the operations-and-maintenance facility south.
Council questions: Members asked about public-safety and crime statements they had heard at a chamber event, truck-load covering for construction material leaving sites, and broader timelines for potential extensions. Smith said he would look into crime-study citations mentioned by Sound Transit leadership and would check into truck-covering practices and compliance.
Ending: Smith said the city continues to coordinate with Sound Transit on testing, restoration and construction schedules as the project moves toward the Dec. 6 opening.
