Commission waives bidding to authorize emergency repair or replacement of courthouse chiller

County administration told commissioners Aug. 26 that a large chiller at the historic Gulf County courthouse had failed and that interim repairs or a replacement could cost up to about $100,000. County staff described the system as an older, 1960s-era unit that controls humidity and air conditioning across courthouse spaces; half the system was no longer working and the unit carries more than 70,000 hours of runtime.
Staff said procurement options include repairing compressors or replacing the unit; a short-term repair would be quicker but less durable while a full replacement would be more expensive and require longer downtime. Commissioners approved a motion to waive competitive-bidding requirements on the basis of emergency needs and authorized staff to proceed with the option that best restored safe and functional climate control for courthouse occupants and the judiciary. The motion passed unanimously, 5-0.
County staff said funding will be identified from the county's capital/maintenance accounts and that administration will return to the board with the final contract and cost details once the vendor selection and scope are finalized.
