Lawndale staff say federal funding uncertainty prompts contingency planning

Superintendent Virginia Castro addressed parent questions about federal and state funding pressures and said the district is preparing for possible reductions.
Castro said district revenue projections were taken at the start of the school year in June and that the district had been "bracing ourselves for the cuts that had to be made." She said the district had received Title funds for the current year but had heard the federal administration might reduce or reallocate Title funding for the following year. Castro said the district has a reduction plan and is meeting daily to plan adjustments. "The one area that I always try to protect is the classroom and the safety," she said.
She also noted the district lost CalFresh fresh-produce funding in a recent change; the district received notice that the state identified another program to supplant that funding and was hopeful that fresh produce distribution would resume through state arrangements.
Castro said the district would communicate changes to families and that some program impacts were likely given declining enrollment and potential federal cuts. She urged families to monitor district communications for budget updates and thanked staff working on contingency planning.
