Michelle Parton, speaking for Crown Hill Cemetery during the Sept. 2 public-comment period, asked council members to help publicize the cemetery's first annual scholarship for local high-school seniors.
Parton said the scholarship eligibility requires applicants to submit an application, a letter from an adult teacher or community leader, 10 to 15 hours of service at the cemetery or a cemetery-related event, and an essay; applications are due Jan. 1. The award for 2025 is one $500 scholarship intended to help with books, tuition or housing, and Parton said the cemetery hopes to expand the program in coming years.
Parton also invited council members to two events: Wreaths Across America on Dec. 13 at noon and a Christmas function at 5 p.m. at Heritage Park. No city action was requested during the meeting beyond assistance with outreach to increase senior participation.
The cemetery representative provided a printed packet to the council describing eligibility and deadlines.
