Jornea West, the coordinator and promoter of the Bay Area Nutcracker Market at the Pasadena Convention Center for the past 10 years, told the City Council during public comment that a newly permitted market with a near-identical name is causing "extreme confusion" among her vendors and shoppers.
West said some vendors registered for the new show thinking it was her established event and that the convention center gave inconsistent information about the new booking. "The convention center has misled me several times and said it was just a trade show and they did not mention anything about a new Christmas market," West said. She asked the mayor and staff to follow up and offered to meet with city representatives to resolve vendor confusion.
West told the council she reserves November for her event and that, historically, the Pasadena Convention Center allowed only one market in that slot; she said "now there are 3 Christmas markets in a row" and that multiple events with similar names have caused vendors and shoppers to sign up for the wrong show. She described financial hardship and requested city assistance.
The city did not take formal action on the comment during the meeting. The mayor and staff were asked to follow up with West after the meeting, and West said she would appreciate a staff contact for next steps.
This account is limited to West's statements in the public-comment period; the convention center did not provide a statement to the council during the meeting nor did staff present documentation resolving the dispute.
