Organizer reports record turnout, fundraising success for Throwdown barbecue event

Terry Brock, who identified himself as a Sutherland resident and event organizer, reported to the council that the city's Throwdown barbecue competition and related Stampede events were a success this year. Brock estimated about 9,700 visitors attended the event, which hosted approximately 38 barbecue teams from several states and included judges from as far as New York and Scotland. Brock said organizers assembled sheds on-site with students from Douglas County and auctioned them to raise scholarship funds; proceeds from the shed auctions were more than $18,000 and were directed to student scholarship funds. He thanked city staff, sponsors and a large cadre of volunteers, saying the effort took dozens of people to set up and clean up and that the park was left in good condition after the event. Councilors and attendees praised the event's growth, and Brock highlighted plans to manage future registration to keep quality teams and community-oriented participants. He noted local vendor Toby Osborne is supplying trophies going forward. No council action was required; the item was a public report of a community event.
