Westbury board approves hires, clerical-unit contract and several resolutions after executive session

The Westbury Union Free School District Board of Education approved multiple personnel appointments, a clerical-unit contract and several time-sensitive resolutions during its Aug. 19 planning and action meeting.
The board approved minutes from July meetings by voice vote after a motion by Dr. Plesk Dickerson and a second from Trustee Matteo Flores; the motion passed unanimously. During the public agenda the board also welcomed a list of probationary and substitute hires and announced upcoming tenure actions. Administrators named Robert Stein as assistant business administrator for operations, pending formal vote later in the meeting.
The board added time-sensitive resolutions to the agenda (identified as items 7k, 7l and 7m) and waived the second reading for several policy items (11a, 11b, 11c) so they could be in place for the academic year. Trustees voted to table certain items earlier in the meeting and later un-tabled and approved resolution items:
- Resolution item 6x was taken out of order and approved; one trustee stated she would abstain because a listed member is related to her. The meeting recorded that the motion passed with one abstention. - Resolution item 6l was un-tabled and approved by a 4–1 vote. - Resolution item 7j was un-tabled and approved by a 4–1 vote.
The board used a block vote process to approve the remainder of the agenda items; the chair called for a block vote and the board approved the package unanimously. The board then entered executive session to discuss negotiations and personnel; the motion to do so passed unanimously. After returning from executive session the board un-tabled the previously tabled items and completed the recorded votes cited above.
Why it matters: The votes and personnel actions put the district’s staffing and administrative arrangements in place before the start of school. The waiver of second readings and inclusion of time-sensitive resolutions indicate the board prioritized immediate operational needs ahead of the academic year.
What to watch for next: the district to publish the formal resolution texts and contract details (including any monetary terms) and to confirm effective dates for newly tenured staff and newly approved hires.
