At the July 8 Westbury Union Free School District Board of Education meeting, a resident asked whether a planned large apartment building in the triangle by Linden Street and Scully Place will increase student enrollment or affect the district's tax revenue.
Resident Isabella Hamilton Lomax raised the question during the public comment portion, praising district administrators before asking about the development reported in Newsday. "Positive thing I'd have to say about the district is how awesome all of our administrators are at each school," she said before asking about the project.
A district staff member responded that the district would gather additional information and report back at a later meeting. "At this time, we will have to gather more information regarding that. And we'll present that at another time," the staff member said. The staff member added that enrollment impact calculations use a more complex formula than simply building size and indicated the initial estimate was a minimum impact.
The board asked a staff member identified as Mr. Kirk to track the inquiry and requested the resident email her question for follow-up. The district did not provide specific enrollment numbers, tax allowance amounts or details of any developer incentives during the public session.
The board did not take a vote or make any policy decision at the meeting on the development; staff committed to returning with more detailed information.
Next steps noted on the public record: district staff will research enrollment impact and any tax incentives or allowances related to the project and present findings at a future meeting. Residents seeking details were asked to submit questions by email to aid the district's follow-up.
