Sutherlin resident urges council to drop proposed safety fee, cites senior hardship and pothole safety concerns

During public comment at the May 12 Sutherlin council meeting, resident Anna Perry addressed the council about a proposed $9 safety fee and raised safety concerns about local road maintenance.
Perry said she lives at “1000 East Central Avenue Space 46” and told the council that adding a $9 fee would be “way too much” for many senior residents in her park, many of whom live on fixed incomes and rely on Social Security. She urged the council to consider budget cuts elsewhere rather than adding fees that would disproportionately affect elderly residents.
Perry also raised a separate public-safety concern about a recurring pothole on Hawthorne Street near the market, saying patching with rock had not fixed the problem and that “when you're driving north on Hawthorne, you dodge it. So, essentially, you could be hit head on by a car turning onto that street. I think it's a real safety hazard.”
The council did not take action on the fee during oral public comment; Perry asked that the record show the park residents oppose the fee as proposed.
