At the August meeting CEC District 28 reviewed its tentative calendar for the coming school year and confirmed dates with several adjustments to avoid holidays and recess weeks.
Members discussed the September meeting date (traditionally the first Thursday of the school year). The council did not reach a seven-vote majority to change the September meeting date; therefore, the meeting remains scheduled on the first Thursday (the council default). Members debated moving it to a later day in the week or to the second week, but no consensus was reached at the meeting time.
The council made specific date adjustments where conflicts were identified: October’s meeting was moved to Oct. 9 to avoid Yom Kippur; January’s meeting was moved to Jan. 8 because the first day of the month was New Year’s Day; April’s meeting was moved to April 16 to avoid spring recess; and the June meeting was moved from June 4 to June 11 because of a school holiday. Council members noted recurring conflicts such as parent-teacher conference windows and school recess weeks and asked staff to publish the confirmed calendar on the council website.
Members asked staff to note the calendar in the meeting minutes, coordinate with presenters, and post the calendar and meeting presenters on the council website so principals, parents and elected officials could plan their schedules.
What the council decided: confirm the monthly calendar with the listed adjustments; where a seven-member majority could not be obtained to change the September date, the meeting remained on the council’s default first-Thursday schedule. What the council did not do: finalize presenters for all months; staff will continue scheduling and confirm presenters at a later date.
The administrative assistant will post the confirmed calendar and update it if presenters require changes.
