The Shenandoah School District Board of Education on Thursday adopted the district's annual goals and reviewed revisions to the district organizational chart intended to clarify responsibilities across central office and building leaders. Dr. Wilson Turner, district leader, presented the goals and the chart during the board's study session and answered board questions.
Dr. Wilson Turner said the goals and objectives are produced annually and tied to the district budget process, adding, "This is a long standing process for us as an organization." She told the board the goals are used to align district- and building-level work and to inform leader evaluations.
The district document lays out four core goal areas: organizational culture and environment, health and well-being, engagement (school and classroom experiences), and personnel/professionalism, plus fiscal responsibility. "We have 4 core goal areas," Dr. Wilson Turner said, describing the approach that links district strategy, building goals and evaluation. The board approved the goals by voice vote after a motion and second; the motion passed with all in favor.
Board members also reviewed a revised organizational chart that the administration said clarifies intersections between school leadership and academic department leaders and reduces the risk of a single point of failure by documenting shared responsibilities. Dr. Wilson Turner described the chart as a "living, breathing document" used for onboarding and to identify capacity and transition needs.
Board members asked about specific new or vacant roles discussed during the presentation; Dr. Wilson Turner said some duties previously held by multiple staff (including Miss Carmen and Miss Salazar) informed the design of a new position to better align work and grow capacity. The board did not take separate action on the chart; the presentation was informational and was paired with the motion to adopt the district goals.
The board's discussion closed with procedural motions adopting the goals for the coming year. The administration said the goal statements will guide spring leadership work and the district's budget process.
Ending: The board framed the adopted goals as a multi-step process that will guide hiring, budgeting and building-level plans; the administration said materials will be used at upcoming leadership and building-level meetings to refine this year's "big rocks."
