County reclassifies positions, raises DPW motor equipment operator pay to attract CDL drivers

At its Aug. 13 meeting, the Law & Finance Committee approved personnel reclassifications and compensation adjustments intended to attract and retain commercial driver’s license (CDL) holders in the Department of Public Works.
The committee amended the 2025 compensation schedule to reclassify a vacant clerk to the sheriff’s office as a civil clerk. Separately, it approved reclassification of 90 positions and the abolition of five currently vacant positions in the Department of Public Works; staff said this action is budget neutral because the changes absorb the increases within departmental funding.
To attract and retain CDL‑licensed drivers, the resolution increases the base salary of motor equipment operators to $53,957, an average increase of $4,448 per position. The action also proposes pay increases for labor positions above the motor equipment operator title to maintain pay separation.
The committee also authorized an agreement with Romer, Wallens, Gold and Monod LLP for labor relations legal services.
Supervisors moved and seconded the HR and insurance agenda items and carried the items; no substantive public debate was recorded on these personnel changes.
