County approves Anthem as new employee health insurer; switch to take effect Jan. 2026

The Jericho County Human Resources Committee voted to authorize the county to enter into an agreement with Anthem Insurance Companies Inc. to provide medical, prescription and dental coverage for eligible county employees and retirees, with the change set to take effect Jan. 1, 2026.
The County Administrator said the decision followed a comprehensive request-for-proposal process run with broker Siegel and finalist interviews. A benefits official told the committee the county interviewed existing provider CDPHP, Aetna and Anthem for medical coverage and considered prescription and dental vendors including MetLife and Delta. The official cited Anthem’s existing contracts with local hospitals, including Albany Med and the St. Peter’s system, the size of Anthem’s provider network and a goal of minimizing disruption as factors in the recommendation.
The benefits official cautioned that projected savings are estimates: “while we project that we will save money with this, those are merely projections,” the official said, adding that national and state health-care cost trends mean rising expenses are likely to continue. The committee was told staff has already begun transition planning and has notified employer unions; employees will receive information ahead of the open enrollment period and will have opportunities to ask questions.
Committee members asked whether plan deductibles would increase. The benefits official replied the county intends to keep the plan design unchanged from current plans with CDPHP for medical and Metropolitan for dental.
The committee approved the resolution by voice vote; members were asked for favor and responded “Aye.” The motion carried by voice vote with no roll-call tally recorded.
