Angleton renames Bates Park Field 4 to honor softball player Peyton Brown

The Angleton City Council on May 13 voted to rename Field 4 at Bates Park “Peyton Brown Field” in memory of a player who died earlier this year and who the softball community said had been deeply involved with the program.
Parks staff presented a request from the Angleton Girls Softball Association. The association and coaches described fundraising and program changes made in Brown’s memory, including a scholarship fund and a namesake tournament; they told council they had raised more than $27,000 for a scholarship. The Parks Board reviewed the request and unanimously recommended approval with no conditions.
Under the proposal the softball association will fund signage and painting; the city will retain the Field 4 designation while adding a commemorative sign above the current Field 4 marker. Mayor Pro Tem Townsend made a motion to approve the renaming; Councilman Sarton seconded and the council approved the motion by voice vote with no opposition.
Council members praised the association’s work and said the renaming would offer local recognition of Brown’s role in the organization. The council did not adopt a separate ordinance; approval was by council motion with direction to coordinate signage and installation logistics with parks staff.
