The Addison City Council adopted a proclamation May 27 designating the town's Public Works and Engineering Department employees as first responders and authorizing the use of the American Public Works Association (APWA) Public Works First Responder symbol.
Becky Divini, the public works director, introduced the department and said staff are honored the council would formally recognize the utility and emergency role public works plays. The proclamation noted APWA created the symbol in 2017 and that the National Incident Management System lists public works alongside police, fire and public health functions for emergency response.
Mayor Bruce Arifton read the proclamation and presented it to the public works team. The resolution authorizes department employees to use the APWA symbol to raise awareness among citizens, government officials and other first responders about public works's critical role in emergency management.
"They are the folks that are making sure your water is turning on, your toilets are flushing, that your roads are..." Divini said as she described daily operations and the department's emergency contributions. The council applauded the recognition and the proclamation was adopted on the regular meeting agenda.
