The Marshall Public Schools Board of Education on July 21 approved a resolution designating $100,000 from the general fund as a committed fund balance to be used only for replacing the district turf football field.
Superintendent Rebecca Jones and staff told trustees that the artificial turf is expected to last about 15 years and that a future replacement cost is estimated at $1,500,000 by about 2040. Staff said the superintendent will determine the actual amount to set aside this fiscal year based on final financial results and must complete that determination by Sept. 15, 2025. The transcript says the board intends to consider this designation annually as part of year-end budget actions.
Board members asked clarifying questions during the discussion. Trustees confirmed the motion approved a $100,000 set-aside for this year only and that annual resolutions will appear on future agendas for the board to approve additional designations as applicable. Several members framed the item as a demonstration of fiscal planning following community feedback on maintenance during a recent bond discussion.
The motion to approve the designation was made by board member Jerry and supported by Secretary Derek Allen. Because the agenda item was a resolution, the board recorded a roll-call vote with all trustees voting yes.
The resolution restricts the $100,000 for turf replacement unless a future board vote rescinds or modifies the designation; staff said the goal is to build toward the estimated replacement cost over time.
