Tecumseh Public Schools presented a mid‑summer facilities update Wednesday reporting wide progress on building repairs, custodial transition savings and equipment projects while noting the pool remains closed pending further testing.
Facilities updates delivered by district staff described the custodial contract with EnviroClean as "fantastic" and fully staffed. Staff said the new vendor provides savings through bulk purchasing and procurement efficiencies: soap that previously cost $78 a case is now available at $47 a case through the vendor, and the outside contract reduces district staff time spent on orders and purchase orders.
The custodial firm provided weekly readiness reports showing building status; as of the staff report, Acres was 100% school‑ready, Sutton 85% and the middle school around 60% (work was ongoing). Work this summer also included gym floor sand-and-refinish cycles (alternate summers get a full sand), repainting classrooms and music rooms using an acoustic paint, playground and exterior power washing, replacement of faded site signage, paving and striping on Sutton parking lots, and crack repair and sealing on the middle school track.
Facilities staff said they are tracking more than 200 requested capital items from principals and staff; about 50% of items were either completed or in progress at the time of the meeting, with another 25% expected to be completed in the next two weeks and the remainder near the start of school.
The facilities report noted uncertainty for a planned solar project after staff were told that a recent federal tax change removed USDA grant eligibility for certain projects; the district said it is assessing alternatives. Staff also reported that the district has applied for a Motorola grant to obtain radios that would tie into state police systems and enable reliable building‑to‑building and emergency communications; the radios would use the same device that local fire and police use.
Trustees and staff also discussed security hardware such as "thumb turns" for classroom doors, color‑coded placards for doors and windows produced by a local sign company (H and H Signs), and deployment of cable drops and devices for clocks and PA systems. Facilities staff said many of the capital projects will be presented in a fuller report to the board in the fall with photos.
Ending — schedule and grants: Staff will continue capital work through the summer, will provide the full summer project report in the fall, and will pursue alternate funding options for the solar project and the Motorola radio grant opportunity.
