The board approved contract award for bid package T14 to install radio boosters for first responders, replace internal radios, and upgrade intrusion detection systems; projects are bond‑funded and intended to improve emergency communications and facilities monitoring.
The Birmingham Public Schools Board of Education on Aug. 26 approved a contract for bid package T14 to install emergency radio communication boosters and upgrade the district’s intrusion detection systems.
Technology lead Riley Kelly described two projects in T14: an enhanced emergency radio communication enhancement system (ERCES) to reduce dead spots and help first responders communicate inside school buildings, and replacement or upgrades to the district’s intrusion detection system that monitors access points and facility equipment (pumps, sprinkler heads, boilers) so facilities staff can detect problems before they affect students. Mr. Kelly said both projects will be funded through the district’s bond program and were discussed with the bond committee.
"So, we'll be outfitting our district with, boosters so that they can have those communications in the event of an emergency," Riley Kelly said. He added the effort includes replacement of internal radios and a system to allow schools to communicate with each other by radio.
Trustees approved the contract award for bid package T14 by voice vote, 5–0. No dissenting amendments were proposed at the meeting.
