Brunswick's school board on July 15 approved a memorandum of understanding with the Brunswick Educational Support Professionals Association (VESPA) to continue incentives for bus drivers and an additional MOU relating to preschool scheduling and benefits. The board also approved a one‑year consultant contract with Shared Service Alliance (SSA) to support the transportation department.
The superintendent summarized the transportation MOU as continuing incentives used over the past three years, including payment for training, a signing bonus and recruitment bonuses for employees who help bring new drivers on board. "We need bus drivers. We need bus drivers," the superintendent said, urging community members to recruit potential drivers.
Separately, the board approved a consultation contract with SSA and its consultant Bill (named in the agenda). The superintendent said Bill "has been a huge part of what has made significant improvements in our transportation department" and has worked through the summer to prepare routes for the school year.
The board also discussed that the district previously issued an RFP for certain special‑needs transportation services to curb rising purchased‑services costs. Board members said some transportation coordination will continue between district staff, the SSA consultant and families, and encouraged residents with questions to use the district website help ticket system.
Both the VESPA MOUs and the SSA contract were approved by roll call at the July 15 meeting.
