Alexander County adopts Budget Amendment No. 7, adds grants for veterans and sheriff wellness software; renews contract to fund three school nurses

Alexander County commissioners on Sept. 8 approved Budget Amendment No. 7 to adjust the general fund for several grant awards and program needs, and they approved a consent agenda that included a $150,000 maximum annual contract with Alexander County Schools to fund three registered school nurse positions.
County Attorney Ben Falconberry presented the amendment, which aligns spending and revenue with an award from the North Carolina Department of Military and Veterans Affairs that was carried forward from the prior fiscal year into fiscal year 2026. The amendment also increases the sheriff’s office budget for a grant from the North Carolina Association of Chiefs of Police Performance and Wellness program; the county said those funds will cover the first year of a personnel‑management software program the sheriff’s office will use to monitor training and personnel records. Falconberry said that software agreement covers one year and the county will reassess after that year.
The amendment also increases the human resources budget to fund speakers on wellness topics at employee wellness and appreciation events using funds from an insurance rebate. Commissioners approved the amendment by official motion and a unanimous vote.
On the consent agenda, the county approved tax abatements and adjustments totaling $23,784.82 and tax refunds of $1,537.95 for the July 24–Sept. 1, 2025 period; minutes from the Aug. 4 regular meeting; several board and committee appointments; a line‑item transfer report for August 2025; minor deed changes to the fire prevention and protection ordinance; a preparedness month proclamation for 2025; and the renewal of the annual contract with Alexander County Schools to provide funding for school nursing services covering three registered nurses with a $150,000 maximum contract amount.
Commissioners approved the consent agenda unanimously by raised-hand vote. Staff noted the VA representative from the county has been appointed to a governor‑level committee to help ensure veterans receive benefits and services; that appointment was noted in commissioner remarks but did not require action.
