Flint Hills donates radios to improve interoperability with Rosemount firefighters

Flint Hills Resources presented a donation to the Rosemount Fire Department on Aug. 19 to buy four Motorola portable radios designed to allow the Pine Bend Refinery fire crew and Rosemount firefighters to use shared radio channels during joint emergency responses. The City Council voted unanimously to accept the donation.
The donation grew out of months of work between Rosemount Fire, the Pine Bend Refinery fire department and regional communications partners. "Currently, the radio systems that we use here at Rosemount are not compatible with those that are used by the Pine Bend refinery fire department," Chief Springer said, describing the communication gap on the fire ground.
Dan Moore, fire chief at the Pine Bend refinery and a representative of Flint Hills Resources, told the council the company was donating $28,385.88 for the equipment. "On behalf of Flint Hills Resources, I'm very pleased to donate or present the donation of $28,385.88 to the Rosemount Fire Department for the purchase of these radios," Moore said.
Chief Springer said the radios will be programmed with shared communications channels through work with the Dakota County Fire Chiefs Association, Dakota 911 radio services and AMCOM Communications. "These radios will be programmed with shared communications channels that will enable seamless interoperability with all public safety responders, regardless of jurisdiction," he said, adding the change aims to improve firefighter safety and protection of critical infrastructure.
Mayor and council members moved and seconded a resolution to accept the donation; the roll call showed unanimous approval. The council also pulled the related consent item 6d for discussion with the fire chief and Flint Hills representatives before the vote.
The donation will fund four Motorola portable radios to be programmed for shared channels; council documents and speakers said the radios are intended for use during emergency operations with Rosemount and other regional responders. No implementation timeline or delivery date was specified at the meeting.
